March 17th is Saint Patrick’s day, a cultural and religious celebration commemorating the death of Saint Patrick. He was the foremost patron saint of Ireland. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general.
Saint Patrick is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity. So, that’s why, on St Patrick's Day, it is customary to wear shamrocks, green clothing or green accessories.
Of course, as with many other holidays that have been brought to America by their native celebrants, Saint Patty’s Day is best celebrated with food! Traditional Irish dishes include Shepherd’s Pie, Irish Soda Bread and Guinness and Gouda Bread.
At Zig’s Bakery and Cafe, we celebrate with our own take on these and other Saint Patrick’s Day treats. Besides our sweet shamrock cookies and Irish breads, one of our most popular recipes is traditional shepherd’s pie! Ready for take-out or dining in, this hearty, delicious meal is suitable for the entire family!
There are many variations of shepherds pie, which was adopted and adapted for various immigrant palates. The common Pennsylvania German recipe calls for corn and beef. The Irish recipe is tomato based with green beans, beef and assorted seasoning, topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked together to create a fantastic and heartwarming home-cooked meal.
